What's Happening in November

Pre-Thanksgiving SunTree Event at Mira Vista Resort, Marana, AZ

When looking at the “What’s Happening” page, you will notice that the pre-Thanksgiving event has been moved to one week earlier than normal this year. This move was made in order for those who have personal Thanksgiving Holiday plans to have an additional week between the SunTree Event and their holiday events. For the SunTree event, we are planning to visit the beautiful Mira Vista Resort in Marana, AZ on the weekend of 15 – 16 November. It is located only about four miles west if I-10 on the northern edge of Tucson. The streets are all paved up to the front gate of the resort.

We will not have a potluck at the resort because they have a wonderful restaurant there. We do “plan” to get together in the ramada at the pools as well as on the patio of the lodging for conversation and chips and dip while we are there. The resort is planning a “movie night” while we are there, but we currently have no information on other resort plans. We have found that it is really a very nice place with a lot to do while we are there.

If you want to check out their facilities, pay a visit to their webpage at http://www.miravistaresort.com/ and if you want to make a reservation to join us for our pre-Thanksgiving get together, give them a call at 520 744 2355.

November Celestial Events

Grand performance by the Moon, accompanied by Venus and Jupiter

In the closing week of October, we have had a spectacular exhibit of Venus and Jupiter in the western skies. This performance continues into November.

Evening: As the evening twilight fades on the day after Halloween, the crescent Moon and spectacular Venus sit side by side, high in the southwest sky. On the third, the Moon dangles beneath Jupiter. This performance stays around for a nightly performance (though the Moon has some other duties to attend to now and then). During the month's final two weeks, Venus drives over to the neighborhood of Jupiter and floats below it on 29 and 30 November. In a near-repeat performance for the closing ceremonies for November, the Moon moves in and hangs below the planet pair; all three of these brightest nighttime objects gather in the deepening twilight.

Morning: Mercury concludes its fine autumn show during the first four days of the month. Even though it is now just 6 degrees above the horizon at a bright magnitude -0.9, low in the east just before dawn.

At midmonth, Saturn will rise around 1:30 AM. By sunrise, bright Saturn is halfway to the zenith (the roof-pole of the dome of the sky), in the southeast.
