What Happened in May

Two times during the month of May, the club members were welcomed into the happy home of our normal Alamogordo hosts for weekend events.

The members were able to see the results of some fantastic refurbishment on the swimming pool. The leak has been repaired in the pool. The cook deck around the pool has been totally replaced by some very competent volunteers. By the time that you read this, there will be a new area of tiling in the yard [NOTE: Since this is being written prior to the second Alamogordo event, the tile has not been seen in place, but the tile, in boxes, was very attractive. It is understood that the tile has been installed.]

The event (the first one anyway) was, as usual, a very pleasant one with attendance by some members who have not been able to get to club events in the recent past. The pool got a lot of use. Most of the conversations took place in the pool rather than on the patio. As is usual, the food was great as was the conversation and hot tub.

June Events

A swim/soak/potluck event in Organ, NM 11 - 12 June
Some SunTree members from Organ, NM have invited the SunTree Potluck Competition Team to their home to enjoy their pools (two hot tubs and a swimming pool), friendship, conversation with the SunTree members and visitors.

There will be a potluck meal on Saturday night, so bring an entrée, side dish of noshing fare for the afternoon feeding frenzy.

Yet Another Welcome from Alamogordo, NM for the Weekend of 25 - 26 June
Once again, the Alamogordo Association of Professional Event Hosts are welcoming us to their home for the serious purpose of splashing in their pool, soaking in their hot tub, eating lots at the potluck meal and enjoying congenial conversation with SunTree members and visitors.

In Anticipation of Our Annual Independence Day Campout (1 - 4 July)
The annual Fourth of July camping trip to the Gila National Forest occurs early in the month for the next newsletter. I am putting the information for that event in this newsletter for those who have never attended the event, but want to this year.

The campsite is located on a ridge, just west of the continental divide. There are NO facilities at this site (unless you have an RV with portable convenient city facilities like water, electricity, pollution, hot tub, crime, stoplights, microwave ovens, air conditioning and loud stereos), so you will need to plan to provide for yourself. As is usual, there will be at least one potluck meal during this weekend. The final plans will determine that.

You will need to contact the event coordinator or SunTree for that information.

For information on the fire danger and other forest news, check with the Gila National Forest website.

June Celestial Events

A Spectacular Triple Performance (A Quartet on one night)
Mercury, by midmonth, becomes a very low evening star right after sunset. A bit higher up, Venus improves in brightness.

The Moon, always willing to help out in any nighttime high jinks, forms up with Venus on 7 June, the two of them, then join in on a triangle formation with Saturn the next night (8 June).

Not getting enough attention with that act, the Moon then decides (in its normal role of location aid) to float alongside Saturn on the 9th. It then moves over to where it is near Jupiter on the 15th. Continuing its month long performance, it then joins brightening Mars in the early hours of the 29th.

Meanwhile, Saturn is still keeping company with those unruly Gemini twins again this month.

A super three-way meeting of Mercury, Venus and Saturn happens 30 to 60 minutes after sunset on the 24th, low in the west. This performance will be augmented with occasional support supplied by the Moon as well as Castor and Pollux (the twins)

Venus and Mercury get even closer together on the 25th, and on the 26th they seem to merge into one dazzling star, with Saturn just below. This will not be a one-night performance, though the closest point only happens once. The "single fantastic star act", starring Venus and Mercury will start around 24 June and continue through 26 June. The most spectacular night should be on 25 June when Venus and Mercury will appear to be a single spectacular heavenly body. That should make for a fantastic post-sunset performance that night.

Summer arrives with the solstice on the 20th at 10:46 PM MDT.
