The SunTree Traveler

What Happened in June

Faywood Celebration Event
The weather was fantastic for the final SunTree event at Faywood Hot Springs prior to the auction of the facility. There was a larger turnout than I personally expected since this is the travel season for most of the SunTree members.

Because of various personal commitments, the participation had several turnovers as some early attendees had to leave and others arrived late. The weekend was a pleasant one as we have come to expect from our trips to the weekend soaks.

We had to award the prize for longest distance traveled to a SunTree event to Pat. He lives in Las Cruces which normally would not qualify him for a distance traveled award, but his chosen route to the event is what landed the title for him. He made two round-trip drives from Las Cruces to Faywood Hot Springs through the weekend with an intermittent round-trip to Ruidoso. That adds up to approximately 458 miles from his home in Las Cruces to the Faywood event. We are not even counting the additional 200 miles that he logged after he left Faywood before he finally got home for some rest (he had to make two round trips to the El Paso, TX airport to meet arriving travelers).

Pat also augmented his award with a cinnamon bun cluster because he brought food for the potluck meal even though he had to leave the event several hours prior to the start of the potluck meal. He truly showed a spirit of participation in a club event.

Thanks Pat, it was good to see you.

Faywood Hot Springs Auction
At the time of the writing of this newsletter, the outcome of the auction for Faywood Hot Springs is unknown, but by the time that you read it, the news may be available.

We all have high hopes that the new owners of the Facility will have interests which are compatible with those of SunTree Travel Club. We also wish the present owners lots of luck in getting a good price for all of the efforts that they have made in making the place a beautiful and pleasant facility for the enjoyment of all.

Alamogordo post Club Orient event
The weather was warm as we would expect in southern New Mexico in the latter half of June, but the companionship and the food was excellent on the weekend of 23 – 24 June in Alamogordo.

The sparkling clean pool was particularly inviting during the daytime century temperature for the SunTree frolickers. They made good use of the arsenal of water-artillery through the day. Two of the devastating surgical-tubing inflatable water delivery systems were destroyed in the afternoon warfare on Saturday.

Along with the normal tonnage of food was a pan of official New Jersey authenticated lasagna to help augment the waistlines. The oral trip reports included the recent trips to Capetown, S.A. and Club Orient in St. Martin, F.W.I.

July Club Doings

Swim time in El Paso (and Summertime Birthday) Event

The SunTree Opening Event for the El Paso swim season will occur on the weekend following Independence Day (7 – 8 July). There will be the usual potluck meal, so plan on some dish to bring to share with the others. Give the club a call to let us know that you will be attending and what dish you plan to bring and what preparation you will need after you get to the event location.

This is always an enjoyable event with a beautiful large pool. A comfortable sized hot tub cascades water into the swimming pool.

In the past, we have also had exciting entertainment at this event since it is timed with the start of the rainy season and fantastic lightening storms are planned for your entertainment. That part of the entertainment was a bit overdone last year, so I will assure you that the floods are not planned for this year. The ark-building committee has been abolished.

If you plan on staying overnight, there is space for RV parking in the back yard. There is one 30 amp outlet and the rest are 20 amp for the RV's. There is room to park about 12 vehicles including RV's in the back yard.

July Celestial Events

Mars Makes a Comeback & a Meteor Shower

Evening: At the beginning of the month, Venus and Saturn are still hanging out very close to each other. That does not last long, though.

Venus will remain very bright for the first 24 days of this month but it will be sinking toward the western horizon though the month. Around the middle of the month, Venus is close to Earth and looks like a little crescent Moon through binoculars. You will need to steady those binoculars with something solid to get the full effect of this tiny, but bright crescent.

Our days of a bright Saturn are slipping away as it is dropping in the southwest at nightfall.

Another primo actor steps on the nighttime sky stage at midmonth. Jupiter, with Venus exiting stage west, has been nominated for this month's prime-time champion at a magnitude -2.5. During midmonth, Jupiter is at its highest at 10 PM, outshining the famous red star, Antares. Just below it.

Morning: Mars is finally making a comeback with an opening month magitude 0.7. On the morning of 9 July, the crescent Moon hangs just to the upper left of Mars (about 5 degrees away).

Mercury (in the morning sky) will be at magnitude 1.1 (somewhat dim). Mercury is technically a morning "star" before dawn for the whole month, but it makes a low mediocre appearance.

Earth reaches aphelion, its position farthest from the Sun in 2007 on 6 July. That, as you have read in this newsletter in past years, is the reason that July is such a frigid month.

The Delta-Aquariad Meteor Shower will start up the streaming video in the early morning twilight as early as 26 July, but the shower should peak on 30 July.
